3 Spiritual Questions

Christmas is over.  The climatic hustle of the western world has descended to the natural outcome of gifts exchanged, swelled stomachs, and wearied travelers destined to face the unalterable fact that there is an inescapable void from living in a fallen world even with all the promises that Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year.
This day of facing the complex reality of living in a fallen world is a perfect opportunity to face that void within and ask yourself some important spiritual questions that have the potential to restore your soul and set you on track spiritually to live out the true promises of God.
God who is your Creator, is your Provider and Protector.  He defends and befriends you and gives you this pattern from the beginning of His Word.  He created the world and provided everything human beings would need to live within it, including the warning not to eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil—one command.  Even after sin, God defends us by giving us gifts we need to live in a fallen world.  He gives us the gift of tears to cry out the poison that infiltrates our souls.  He tells us to take a Sabbath to re-orientate our souls as to Who He is.  He sent His Son to die for our sins and by the power of His blood it is possible for us to overcome the sorrows associated with living in this world of woes.  He gives us His Word filled with His commands.
Even before sin He offered commands for living in Paradise.  There are five commands found in Genesis 2:28:
1.       Be fruitful
2.       Multiply
3.       Replenish the earth—replace what you use up
4.       Subdue it
5.       Have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of the air, and over everything that moves on the earth.
These commands are still asked of us today.  All Christians are capable of bearing spiritual fruit such as love, joy and peace.  We are sent out with this fruit to disciple and teach others to disciple.  We are asked to consider what we received when we were born into this fallen world and how our lives can make the world better in some ways before we leave here through our death.  Christians must subdue the world and push back the effects of the fall through the fruit they bear when they do not compromise the truth of God’s word even when people will not listen.   Christians are commanded to take dominion over sin by not compromising His word with the world’s values.
We can live out these commands by asking ourselves the three spiritual questions that keep us on track with God’s purposes.  Who am I?—You are a dearly beloved child of God.  What am I to do with my life?—Live it in preparation for your death by following God’s will for your life.  How am I to do it?—meditate on God’s word and be guided by the Holy Spirit as to the ways you specifically live out your days.

The fact is our life here on earth has a purpose: For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad (2 Corinthians 5:10).

A Pilgrimage that Started with Tears

Who would think I would shed tears deciding to set out on a wonderful journey that I have longed to take for many years?   Before I was ready to fully accept God’s invitation for a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, I had to journey to a place of agreement between what my soul wanted and what the Lord wanted for me.   For years I have been declining opportunities to travel to Israel—not because I didn’t want to go but because I wanted to go with my husband by my side.   I know that God could have arranged that for me, but instead He asked me to accept that He wanted me to be willing to go and leave everything behind.   When I was asked to make a decision about going on a Pilgrimage to Jerusalem, God gave me this verse in answer to my prayer -- Debi, observe therefore all the commands I am giving you today, so that you may have the strength to go in and take over the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess (Deuteronomy 11:8).   I decided through tears that I would go on

Day Nine - Journey's End

I didn't think I could write today, but do to bad weather we now have extra time at the airport. Today we looked over the model city and I can't believe all I have learned. Some of the excavations since the model was completed reveal differences in what they built in the model. What amazed me was that I could see what wasn't where I expected based on what I experienced. Here is a wide view of the Model City which is 1:5 scale.  It was created by a Jewish man who wanted his son to understand what Jerusalem was once like.  Someone said that if you didn't see Jerusalem during the time of Herod the Great, you have never seen a beautiful city.  Do you understand what I mean about how grand this Temple was?            Next we saw the Dead Sea Scrolls.  I learned a lot about the Essenes.  They lived like monks today.  Like Jesus, they were not happy with the way the Temple was being run and they came to the desert to offer truly holy sacrifices, untainted by the mismanage

Not Treating Others as Their Sins Deserve

Turning the other cheek has become a Christian cliché.   These beautiful and penetrating words of Jesus are minimized when we humans try to apply them without God.   The best we can do to achieve Jesus’ description in our power is repress our anger about the way someone sins against us.   This only serves to make us look stupid to the world, creates ulcers, or causes an unplanned, embarrassing, public explosion of anger.   Jesus spoke these words and many others like them to invoke the spiritual understanding that it is impossible to live out His directions for our lives without Him.   He has no intention of our trying to take His work on in our flesh.             It happens all the time in marriages and other relationships where one person who thinks they need to be a certain way to please God centers his or her relationships around keeping peace.   I don’t believe that kind of turning the other cheek is very pleasing to God.               No, God is inviting us
