Christmas
is over. The climatic hustle of the
western world has descended to the natural outcome of gifts exchanged, swelled
stomachs, and wearied travelers destined to face the unalterable fact that
there is an inescapable void from living in a fallen world even with all the
promises that Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year.
This day
of facing the complex reality of living in a fallen world is a perfect
opportunity to face that void within and ask yourself some important spiritual
questions that have the potential to restore your soul and set you on track
spiritually to live out the true promises of God.
God who
is your Creator, is your Provider and Protector. He defends and befriends you and gives you
this pattern from the beginning of His Word.
He created the world and provided everything human beings would need to
live within it, including the warning not to eat of the Tree of the Knowledge
of Good and Evil—one command. Even after
sin, God defends us by giving us gifts we need to live in a fallen world. He gives us the gift of tears to cry out the
poison that infiltrates our souls. He
tells us to take a Sabbath to re-orientate our souls as to Who He is. He sent His Son to die for our sins and by
the power of His blood it is possible for us to overcome the sorrows associated
with living in this world of woes. He
gives us His Word filled with His commands.
Even
before sin He offered commands for living in Paradise. There are five commands found in Genesis
2:28:
1.
Be fruitful
2.
Multiply
3.
Replenish the earth—replace what you use up
4.
Subdue it
5.
Have dominion over the fish of the sea and over
the fowl of the air, and over everything that moves on the earth.
These commands are still asked of us
today. All Christians are capable of
bearing spiritual fruit such as love, joy and peace. We are sent out with this fruit to disciple
and teach others to disciple. We are
asked to consider what we received when we were born into this fallen world and
how our lives can make the world better in some ways before we leave here through
our death. Christians must subdue the
world and push back the effects of the fall through the fruit they bear when
they do not compromise the truth of God’s word even when people will not
listen. Christians are commanded to
take dominion over sin by not compromising His word with the world’s values.
We can live out these commands by
asking ourselves the three spiritual questions that keep us on track with God’s
purposes. Who am I?—You are a dearly
beloved child of God. What am I to do
with my life?—Live it in preparation for your death by following God’s will for
your life. How am I to do it?—meditate
on God’s word and be guided by the Holy Spirit as to the ways you specifically
live out your days.
The fact is our life here on earth
has a purpose: For we
must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may
receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or
bad (2 Corinthians 5:10).
