Holy Peace and Merry Christmas

Peace on Earth—Good Will Toward Men
I could be a multi-millionaire if I could find a way to bottle the peace that transcends understanding (Philippians 4:7).  However, if I tried to do that, it would demonstrate that I didn't fully receive that peace.  I only say it that way because it is a peace that is out of this world and something that lost souls are so desperate for that if they had even a taste of it, they would go to any extreme to have more of it.
I received this peace recently as an utmost gift from my loving God because He gives peace generously and unexpectedly to those who are seriously seeking Him.  I got caught up in a conflict that got out of hand recently.  Through prayer and wise counsel the Lord showed me my sin and asked me to confess what He showed me.  I did.  The situation got worse; but this time, though I am not innocent for sure, I did not rebel against God and followed His direction to stand firm.  When I came home I expected to be stirred up—I don't like to be involved in situations like this—but I was overcome with a supernatural experience of peace.  I took that as God’s delight in me, though fallen, I basically stood firm in a loving manner.
The peace of earth the angels  described to the shepherds in Luke 2: 14 came to us from heaven in the form of the infant Jesus.  Not only did I receive peace in my soul but also I felt good will toward those who stirred up the potential conflict.  God’s peace not only affects my relationship with Him; it also affects my relationship with others.
During this last Sunday before Advent, we focus our hearts on the peace of the Nativity opened up to us from God’s messengers from heaven.  These angels of Christmas are associated with the fourth candle of advent.  While the prophets show us hope, Mary shows us love and the shepherds demonstrate joy; it’s only a purely heavenly messenger that can tell us about peace.
Because of sin we have lost the peace of heaven.  It can only be restored by repentance and obedience to the Christ child who was sent to us.  I can't sell you that peace, but I can witness to it.  Let me assure you that when you: Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7) you experience what the angels announced to the Shepherds—Peace on Earth.
Christmas Day is just around the corner pushing up against the fourth Sunday of Advent.  That is the day we light the white candle in the center of the Advent Wreath and receive the full glory of its light.  It’s all about the Christ child at Christmas.
I want to wish you a Holy Christmas day.  Don't miss out on making time to reflect on God’s greatest gift of the Christ child.  Remember how the virtues of hope, love, joy and peace have come to you this Advent Season.  Have a Holy, Merry Christmas.

A Pilgrimage that Started with Tears

Who would think I would shed tears deciding to set out on a wonderful journey that I have longed to take for many years?   Before I was ready to fully accept God’s invitation for a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, I had to journey to a place of agreement between what my soul wanted and what the Lord wanted for me.   For years I have been declining opportunities to travel to Israel—not because I didn’t want to go but because I wanted to go with my husband by my side.   I know that God could have arranged that for me, but instead He asked me to accept that He wanted me to be willing to go and leave everything behind.   When I was asked to make a decision about going on a Pilgrimage to Jerusalem, God gave me this verse in answer to my prayer -- Debi, observe therefore all the commands I am giving you today, so that you may have the strength to go in and take over the land that you are cr...

Day Nine - Journey's End

I didn't think I could write today, but do to bad weather we now have extra time at the airport. Today we looked over the model city and I can't believe all I have learned. Some of the excavations since the model was completed reveal differences in what they built in the model. What amazed me was that I could see what wasn't where I expected based on what I experienced. Here is a wide view of the Model City which is 1:5 scale.  It was created by a Jewish man who wanted his son to understand what Jerusalem was once like.  Someone said that if you didn't see Jerusalem during the time of Herod the Great, you have never seen a beautiful city.  Do you understand what I mean about how grand this Temple was?            Next we saw the Dead Sea Scrolls.  I learned a lot about the Essenes.  They lived like monks today.  Like Jesus, they were not happy with the way the Temple was being run and they...

Laity Lodge and a Writers' Conference

Laity Lodge and a Writers’ Conference…two of my favorite things happening in one place.  Laity Lodge is a writer’s dream.  Though it has been years since my last visit, I remember how my soul came alive while journeying into the hidden haven of peace and sanctuary I discovered at Laity Lodge.  No writer at heart could be disappointed by whatever God has in store for any weekend at Laity Lodge.  This particular weekend is designed just for writers.  I hope to find a refuge in a place of clear, clean, untouched majesty of God's creation, in the midst of the unique community of Christian writers who will inhabit this sacred space for a weekend.  What could be better than that? http://www.laitylodge.org/writers-retreat-ii/
