Glory to Glory

Lent and Easter are over for this year.  What effect have they had on your life?  How will you become more glorious by Easter next year?  Jesus lived His life focused on gaining the glory of Easter.  He tells us to follow Him and do as He does.
Romans 2:7 describes our life as Christians: To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.  The evidence of the glory of Easter will show up in your life by your persistence in doing good.
How do you know if what you are doing is good?  You can evaluate the deeds you do by whether they bring glory and honor and have eternal significance.  Jesus lived His life focused on glorifying God.  This brought life to Him.  Where is the glory of God displayed in your life?  I have a hint.  Look for the places that you would least expect God to receive glory.  That is usually the place where He receives the most glory in your life.  Jesus met a blind man begging outside the Temple in Jerusalem.  The disciples asked Jesus about the man who was born blind.  Their limited reasoning capacity brought only two possibilities for this man’s hardship in life.  They wondered if the man had sinned or if his parents had sinned to experience such a harsh punishment of living in the world without sight.  Jesus explained the third reason:  But this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him (John 9:3).
Why are we challenged to be persistent in doing good if all our problems are over because of Easter?  Our eternal problems are settled for sure, and we are given the Holy Spirit to strengthen us through life, pushing back against the fall.  The effects of the fall are everywhere and that is why persistence is required if you are seeking glory.  The worst thing you can do is grow comfortable in this world.  Being at home here will keep you from glory.  You will exchange glorious opportunities for a landfill of smelly waste.
What is God asking you to be persistent in doing to bring about His glory?  What is your unique assignment in pushing back the fall in your space and time in this world?  How does your life honor God and gain significance for eternity?  These are the glorious questions your life choices will answer.
When Moses came away from meeting with God, God’s glory shown from his face.  Moses had to wear a veil because the glory of God that reflected from Him was too much for most people to take.  Has anyone noticed the glory of God shining in you?  Has anyone given you a compliment that you know is not you but the Lord?  Do you reflect the glory of God in the good deeds you do?
God’s glory is in all the world.  Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth (Psalm 57:11).  May your good deeds result in God’s glory!  May you become glorious in all your ways.

A Pilgrimage that Started with Tears

Who would think I would shed tears deciding to set out on a wonderful journey that I have longed to take for many years?   Before I was ready to fully accept God’s invitation for a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, I had to journey to a place of agreement between what my soul wanted and what the Lord wanted for me.   For years I have been declining opportunities to travel to Israel—not because I didn’t want to go but because I wanted to go with my husband by my side.   I know that God could have arranged that for me, but instead He asked me to accept that He wanted me to be willing to go and leave everything behind.   When I was asked to make a decision about going on a Pilgrimage to Jerusalem, God gave me this verse in answer to my prayer -- Debi, observe therefore all the commands I am giving you today, so that you may have the strength to go in and take over the land that you are cr...

The Purpose of Suffering

It’s not that I haven’t faced my own degree of personal suffering. It isn’t that I am numb to the vast array of suffering that is taking place all over the world at this very moment in time. It is that I remain confident in the grandeur of God’s goodness even as the reality of the suffering in this world is too much for my heart to bear. I believe that no degree of suffering is ignored by the loving God who created a universe in which suffering was never intended to exist. If I could fully take all the suffering of this world, my heart and soul would never survive. The weight of suffering is too heavy for me. Yet, I know He knows every degree of suffering taking place even in this moment. God alone has the capacity to face the reality of the suffering of His entire creation. Beyond that, I know He is working to end the suffering of this world. So then, you may ask , Why ? My only answer is to tell you to look to God. See His response to suffering. He has tak...

Jesus from the Cross

May you experience a holy Holy Week…I participated in daily Holy Week devotions at my church.  You can watch and reflect on the video devotions about Jesus Seven Sayings from the Cross each day at:  http://www.pcbc.org/worship/easter/holy-week-devotionals/ Jesus from the Cross               Jesus’ journey to the cross was extraordinarily short, yet it transformed death from being eternal to only temporary. He literally trampled death by death.   Jesus was arrested around 1:30 a.m.; and by 3:00 p.m. that same day He was dead.  In less than 14 hours He was tried by illegal courts, flogged, walked the 650 yards to Golgotha, the place of the skull, crucified on a cross and died.  Though God asked so much of Him, He would not permit the suffering to last one minute longer than necessary. Jesus hung on the cross from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.  Those were probably six of the longest hours of ...
